TRIGGER WARNING: There is great detail of abuse in this poem and involves death.
I wrote this back in 2015 or 2016 while in high school.
I love my daddy very much,
but when he hits, I’ve had enough.
That table goes sliding across the floor-
I think I don’t want to be here anymore.
My mommy says it’s just a phase.
It will pass one day.
We will be fine if we stay out of his way.
We love him. So we decide to stay.
At night I hear them scream and shout.
I tremble at that horrid sound.
I walk out of my bedroom door, and see my mommy crying on the floor.
I lay awake alone in my bed.
When will this horror end?
When will it end?
I have a friend, who told me of hands that don’t hit,
words that don’t hurt,
love that never fails.
Love that truly loves and doesn’t hurt-
who accepts you as you are and where you’ve come from.
I stayed at my friends house tonight.
She told me more of this love.
“I want that in my life,” I said.
She told me I can start a brand new beginning.
She told me I can run away and be safe,
she told me she can adopt me into her family.
I decide to go home one more night to bring my mommy to my new home.
As I walk in the house, I see my daddy running down the hall-
He runs after me and throws me against the wall.
He says, “You sit and stay, never will you leave.
Your mother up and left, left you here with me.”
The phone starts ringing, I start to pray-
“Dear Jesus, keep me safe tonight and take me from this place.”
“The police are coming,” my daddy says. “They want to take you away, but I won’t let them. Forever mine you’ll stay.”
My daddy beats and beats me to where I cannot see-
Sounds start fading out, but the flashing lights I see.
Are they coming for me?
I wake up in a strange but wonderful place.
No more lights, no more pain, not a single scream.
I see someone standing by a huge pearly gate.
He smiles at me and greets me with a hug.
He says, “Welcome my child, to your new home. You are free, never more to feel unloved, for you are deeply loved by me.
Come and enjoy the wonderful food and riches I have in store, you have done your purpose in life, for you have found my light.”
Thank you to my friend who showed me this man’s love.
He died on the cross for me, and saved me from my sin.
If he loves me for who I am and let me in his home,
then you too can live with him forever and never be alone.
