I’m in the boat with all of the church
and I look out onto the water.
Jesus is standing there.
He says, “Come to me.”
I swing one leg over the side after the other
and keep one hand on the rail.
“It’s alright. Come out to me.” He says.
“But Jesus, what if I drown?”
He smiles and says, “Keep your eyes on me.”
I take one step, two steps, three steps.
I can hear the water crashing around me.
Four steps, five steps, six steps,
and the walls of water surround me.
I look down and now I’m scared, terrified of sinking, drowning.
“Keep your eyes on me.” He says.
“But Jesus, the world is in chaos. My life is a mess. I can’t control my flesh.”
“Keep your eyes on me!”
I look to him and see his face, he seems so far away. I start again taking my steps toward him.
One, two, three-
I look down again.
“Keep your eyes on me.”
One, two, three, four, five-
I look behind me to see how far I’ve come.
“Keep your eyes on me.”
The waves crash harder and harder and the rain starts pouring down and piercing my face.
The rain drops feel like arrows and every element around me wants me dead.
“Keep your eyes on me.”
Next thing I know, I start to fall but a loving embrace catches me.
I look up, exhausted, and it’s Jesus’ face I see.
